What Is PPI and Why It Matters

PPI (pixels per inch) measures pixel density on a digital display. Higher PPI means sharper text, clearer images, and more detailed graphics. This is especially important for smartphones, laptops, tablets and gaming displays.

How PPI Is Calculated

PPI uses two inputs: screen resolution and screen size. The diagonal resolution is calculated using the Pythagorean theorem, then divided by diagonal length in inches.

Why PPI Is Important

  • Sharper text and reading clarity
  • Better detail for photos and HDR content
  • More precise UI scaling for design & development
  • Critical for VR and high-density mobile screens

A PPI above 350 is considered excellent for smartphones. Laptops generally range from 140–300 PPI.
